San Diego Neon Neighborhood Signs

San Diego has some awesome neon signs representing a lot of the different neighborhoods and cities in the county, so I decided to make it a project to take photos of all of them. I THINK I have them all, but if any of you know of something I missed, let me know! It was fun seeking out the ones that I hadn’t been by before, but most of them I had already seen in my adventures throughout the city. Most of them are pretty old and have been restored, so it’s fun to see a bit of history around the city. I’m also working on actually exploring all of these neighborhoods, and eventually hope to get photos of each area. If any of you have been to/live in San Diego, what are your favorite neighborhoods/areas?

Next I have to redo them all at night, when they’re lit up! 🙂 P.S. These are all available for purchase as prints, on canvas, etc. Just send me a message!

Unleashed by Petco Surf Dog Competition

There are two things that San Diego loves: surfing and dogs. There are more things, yes, like tacos, but this is about the marriage of those two wonderful things, ergo: dog surfing. I had seen photos of San Diegan surfing dogs circulating the internet, but never witnessed it in person. When I heard about the Surf Dog Competition, I HAD to go. It was everything as promised; many surfing dogs, ranging from small to extra large, as well as some sort of buddy competition, where dogs surfed together or with their owners, as well as a dog play area, dog photo booth, and many dog-friendly vendors. We brought our sweet baby Widdle, and he had a great time! It was a little hot for him because he was a bit of a wimp, but otherwise, it is a great event for the whole fur-family! We couldn’t stay the whole time, due to Widdle’s dainty composure, but what we did get to do/see was a lot of fun!

Del Mar Racetrack

Background story on this:  Several months ago, like possibly a year ago, I met a photographer at Seaport Village who was participating in a scavenger hunt as part of a Meetup group. I think I must have had my camera with me, because he told me all about the group, and recommended that I try it out. He gave me his card, but I forgot about it for a long time, and I”m not sure where exactly it is now. So I finally decided to go look for the group on Meetup.com, and I have no idea which one it was, ha. I did, however, find some great photography groups (and have since then started joining other groups, although I haven’t gone to any except this one photography group so far). The Pacific Photographic Society is AMAZING, and they have all sorts of events all the time. This was my first event with them, and it was such a great opportunity!

So, as part of the Meetup with the Pacific Photographic Society group, we got press passes for a day at the Del Mar Racetrack. We got to go early in the morning to watch the warm-ups, then a tour of a stable, and then we got to go to a bunch of special locations to take photos of the races and the horses getting ready that the general public doesn’t get to go to. I had been to the racetrack before, but definitely didn’t get this kind of special access, so it was a lot of fun. The members of the Meetup group are great too, and everyone was so helpful with tips on shooting and such. I highly recommend the group, and I can’t wait for more events like this! Also, horse racing is fun. 🙂

Happy New Year!!

072_12131_fullHappy New Year!! 2015 was a CRAZY year, both personally and for the business! Hubby (the cute one, pictured here) was gone for the first part of the year (which was only half of the the deployment) and I was discovering San Diego on my own, with my baby puppy Widdle. The last half has been a whirlwind, including losing Widdle, getting two new baby puppies, Wicket and Weechee, moving to a new place, much more exploring, and becoming a member of Spanish Village and figuring out what to do with my business. At the beginning of the year, I was going to pursue photojournalism, but I had no idea that I would get the opportunity to be one of the artists at Spanish Village! I am excited to continue to photograph the things that I love the most, and for 2016, the current plan is to expand into product photography. I love capturing interesting details, angles, etc. when I take photos, so I would love to be able to use my perspective to try to take great photos of people’s products!

This is me sorta making New Year’s resolutions, because I’ve never been into that. So it’s my business goal for the year; product photography! My other goal is to enjoy life as much this year as last year, and even more!  I am also going to try to be better at posting on here. 🙂  I hope all of you had wonderful 2015’s and have even better 2016’s ahead!

Thank you to Robyn Icks Photography for the amazing photo!

Weekly Photo Challenge: (Extra)ordinary

In response to The Daily Post’s weekly photo challenge: “(Extra)ordinary.”

Alright y’all… This is my FAVORITE thing to photograph.  I don’t post as many of them, because I’m never sure if other people like them as much as I do, but seriously, my favorite thing in the world to take photos of is “ordinary” things.  I am very detail-oriented, so I notice little things that others often do not.  In addition, I find almost everything beautiful.  Give me something “boring”, and there’s a good chance I can pick out something about it that I find beautiful.  And then cry about it, because I cry about beautiful things.  Yup, that’s me…cries about everything.  It’s great!

I had a hard time choosing one photo for this challenge, as you might guess from what I just said…I might have to make my own regular posts of (extra)ordinary things!  I just took this photo yesterday, so I choose it because it was my most recent (extra)ordinary thing, and one I hadn’t edited yet.  I was also excited to have a use for these fabulous mushrooms, because I wasn’t sure what to do with them otherwise. 🙂 I absolutely hate mushrooms as a food, I keep trying but I have not yet found a mushroom that I like, but I am completely fascinated by them, and tend to freak out when I find some.  Just look at them!!  Aren’t they fantastic?!

Garden Party of the Century

Anything that has this name, of course I had to go! Since this year is Balboa Park’s centennial anniversary, they are doing a bunch of special things all year long, and a big floral party was one of them. I unfortunately had to miss most of it, but did get to see this one small part of it. You can’t go wrong with flowers!

MotorCars on MainStreet Car Show

I love cars.  If y’all haven’t figured that out already… I particularly love old cars.  I mean…I love super fancy cars too, but your average car now is definitely not as awesome as your average vintage car.  Therefore, vintage car shows are particularly fantastic, such as this one.  It’s the Coronado car show (although not the Coronado Speed Festival, which actually took place two weekends ago, and I missed due to being at Disneyland for Dapper Day!  So many things), and there were so many amazing vintage cars!  It was such a fun car show.

Coronado Flower Show, part 2

This is the second and last set of photos from the Coronado Flower Show, the first is here.

Coronado Flower Show

As I mentioned in my last post, I LOVE flowers.  I have never been to a show that was just flowers, so I was pretty excited to go to the Coronado Flower Show.  It was AMAZING!!  I’ve never seen so many flowers in one place, and there was a great variety of different types of displays, including tiny arrangements, table settings, children’s creations, etc.  There was even some live music!  This is my first post out of two, because I have so many photos!
